Coinbase alternatives
Ranked by the reason you are leaving. Every list below is computed from the same published sub-scores as the rest of the site, with Coinbase removed.
Coinbase is the most expensive major venue at entry tier — 0.60% maker and 1.20% taker on Advanced Trade, and materially worse on the simple buy flow — and that is why almost every search for a Coinbase alternative exists. The second reason is product: no margin, no options, no copy trading for retail. Someone who has outgrown a first exchange finds there is not much left to grow into. A third group left after the 2025 incident in which bribed support contractors leaked personal data; no funds were taken from the exchange, but the reader who values privacy over convenience took note.
What you give up is real. Coinbase is a listed US company with audited financials and the clearest regulatory standing in crypto, and its fiat rails — free ACH in particular — are as painless as they get. A US resident switching purely on fees has a short list of regulated options; everything else requires going offshore, which is a different risk decision.

When you should stay on Coinbase
You buy occasionally, you fund by ACH, and you want the least friction between a bank account and a first purchase. For that job the fee is a rounding error and the regulatory clarity is worth having. Frequent traders should look at Coinbase One before leaving.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest Coinbase alternative for US residents?
The US low-fee shortlist above is computed from exchanges that serve US residents, ranked on fees. Kraken Pro at 0.40%/0.80% is the most direct regulated substitute — still cheaper than Coinbase by a third at entry tier, though the gap narrowed in July 2026.
Should I just get Coinbase One instead of switching?
If you trade several times a month, run the numbers. Coinbase One is a monthly subscription that flattens trading fees; for a frequent trader it can beat every alternative without opening a new account. For an occasional buyer it costs more than it saves.
Did the 2025 breach affect customer funds?
No. Contractors leaked personal data for a subset of users; the exchange itself was not breached and Coinbase committed to reimbursing customers who were subsequently tricked into sending funds. It is on our record as a data incident, not a custody one.
