8.2

Our verdict

The right answer for a first purchase and the wrong answer for an active trading account. Buy here, move to a cheaper venue when your monthly volume makes the fee gap real.

What works

  • A publicly listed US company with audited financials and the clearest regulatory standing in the sector
  • The easiest first-purchase flow of any major exchange
  • Deep fiat integration including free ACH deposits in the US

What does not

  • The most expensive major venue at entry tiers — 1.2% taker on Advanced Trade, worse on the simple flow
  • No margin or options for retail; a thin product set for active traders
  • A 2025 insider data breach exposed customer personal data

The full review

Coinbase optimises for the first ten minutes of a user’s crypto life, and it is the best in the world at that. Account opening, identity verification, bank linking and a first purchase can be done end-to-end without reading any documentation.

The cost of that polish is the fee schedule. Advanced Trade starts at 0.60% maker and 1.20% taker at the lowest volume tier — roughly twelve times what Binance charges a taker. Coinbase One, a monthly subscription, flattens trading fees and makes sense for anyone trading regularly enough to notice.

On safety, Coinbase is the strongest disclosure story available: a Nasdaq-listed company filing audited financials beats a self-published Merkle tree. It does not publish proof-of-reserves, which sounds worse than it is — audited public filings are the higher standard.

The 2025 incident was social engineering of overseas support contractors, not a custody failure. No exchange funds were lost, but personal data was exposed, and that class of breach is what enables later phishing. Treat any unexpected "Coinbase support" contact as hostile.

How we reviewed Coinbase

We scored Coinbase against the same nine criteria we apply to every exchange: fees, security, liquidity, features, ease of use, support, country availability, deposit options and long-term track record. Fee figures come from the exchange’s own published schedule (verified 2026-09-04), availability from its terms and support documentation, and the incident history from primary reporting and the exchange’s own disclosures.

This review was written by Vetted Exchanges Editorial Team and fact-checked by Vetted Exchanges Review Board. It is scheduled for re-verification by 2026-12-04, and sooner if Coinbase changes its pricing, its country availability, or its security posture. Vetted Exchanges Editorial Team holds no position in Coinbase or its token, and the affiliate relationship disclosed above played no part in the score.
